George Bitar discovered wood in-lay, commonly known as 'mosaic inlay', more than a century ago in Damascus, Syria. He was inspired by the mosaic tile work on the facade of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and wanted to create a similar effect with wood, transferring the same beautiy onto furniture and other accessory pieces. Branches from walnut, apricot, rose, olive, lemon and other Syrian indigenous trees are collected, dried and cut into different sizes. The pieces are then glued on to the surface of the item creating an exquisite layering of patterns and design. |
